In a not so surprising turn of events, Todd Bowles has fired Special Teams Coordinator Bobby April after only one year with the organization. Assistant Special Teams coach Steve Hagen and Assistant Offensive Line coach Ron Heller were also let go Wednesday.
“I decided that changes were necessary in these areas,” Bowles said. “I appreciate their contributions this past season and wish them success in the future.”
April was under scrutiny throughout the season for the Jets poor play on special teams, and the fact that it showed little to no improvement as the season progressed, makes this a predictable move. The Jets have solid special teams players such as Trevor Riley, Rontez Miles and Jeremy Kerely so the staff will have to search for a new coordinator that can utilize that talent in a way April could not.
