It was recently announced that New York Jets first year GM Mike Maccagnan has been named the NFL executive of the year by the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) per NJ.com. The PFWA came to their decision in large part due to Maccagnan’s free agent signings this past offseason.
After John Idzik was fired, Maccagnan had a lot of cap space to work with, which translated into the signings of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brandon Marshall, James Carpenter, Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine, and Marcus Gilchrist. Additionally, 1st round draft pick Leonard Williams and 3rd round draft pick Lorenzo Mauldin IV look like they’re going to develop into at least league average starters with talent ceilings exceeding that. All of these moves resulted in the Jets improving by 6 wins in Maccagnan’s first year. The only team to improve more from last season is the Carolina Panthers who improved by eight wins and are the current favorites to win the Superbowl.
Maccagnan hasn’t had much time this offseason to make big moves yet, and with a lot less cap room it is unlikely the now second year GM goes on a spending spree similar to last year. However, he is already making smart smaller moves evidenced by the recent departure of Demario Davis. Last season, Davis often looked inept in coverage and Erin Henderson replaced him as the season went on. Moves like this aren’t ground breaking, but they show that Maccagnan is capable of making the roster better even with a much smaller budget.
It seems that for the foreseeable future, the NY Jets have stability at GM and Head Coach, which is the foundation for a franchise that has continued success and a winning culture.
Other Jet Notes:
-The Jets have signed former Steelers kick returner Dri Archer to a future/reserve contract. Archer is more known for running a 4.26 40 time at the combine then for anything he did on the field with the Steelers. He is not a sure thing to make the team.
-Brandon Marshall was quoted as saying that he did not want Colin Kapernick on the Jets, and that Ryan Fitzpatrick is his guy. This was in response to rumors that Kapernick want’s off the 49ers and onto the NY Jets squad.
