Although the MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online has nearly 12 years under its belt, it is still far from dead. The developers have now announced the plans for 2019 and beyond and are surprised by the announcement of a new expansion.

A new addon!

What did the developers announce? The producers’ letter is that the team in the near future would like to focus on the current story around the “Black Book of Mordor”. This story leads the heroes to the next expansion. Yes, there is actually a new addon. This is the first major expansion since “Mordor” in summer 2017.

You visit the valley of Anduin and discover secrets there.
You will return to Mordor and explore the Minas Morgul Fort.
There you will meet the giant spider Kankra.
All this should then lead to the addon.
It is not clear what the addon is about.

Why is the addon a surprise? After Mordor, there was no longer any talk of further enlargement. At Daybreak Games, the team focused on smaller, regular content updates that broadened the story. That now comes a new addon but is exciting.

When will the addon come? It is not known when the extension will appear. It could be ready by the end of the year, but it is more likely that it will not come until 2020. Also, a name for the addon is not fixed yet.

What else is coming? Standing Stone Games said that other interesting things happen in LotRo this year:

Further balancing adjustments to the classes
Balancing adjustments throughout the game. The adventures should not be any harder with the upcoming expansion than they are in Mordor. Nevertheless, one wants to offer high-level heroes in instances of special challenges.
For March, the release of a 64-bit client is planned, which should improve the performance and load times.
The extension is intended to improve crafting so players can make very special and powerful items.
The virtue system is being reworked: you will soon receive Virtue EXP for heroic deeds, which you can distribute to individual virtues.
Clans and groups also receive revisions
Legendary servers are getting new content. Next up is Moria.

What is missing from the players? While the announced features are pretty well received by the fans and the community is especially looking forward to the new addon, some are wondering if a new class or a new nation is coming too. In fact, nothing was said about that in the producer’s letter.

Even if the LotRO community is known to have a lot of announcements to make, this time it’s about whatever76543 in the official forum: “Surprisingly little to complain about.”
