Wilkerson Contract Talk Won’t Affect Him On Field

New York Jets mandatory minicamp opened today, and despite some trepidation over reports of friction in the Wilkerson contract extension talks, all seemed to be well in Florham Park today. Wilkerson took reps with the first team, as per usual. His agent, Chad Wiestling, was quoted by Jets beat reporter Rich Cimini as saying Wilkerson is “willing to put the team ahead of his own contractual status” and that he “loves being a member of the Jets.” Speaking to reporters after practice, Jets Head Coach Todd Bowles seemed more than pleased with Wilkerson’s presence. He remarked that Wilkerson “weighed in well” and that “he had pretty good knowledge of [Bowles’ new defensive] system,” indicating that despite the ongoing contract negotiations Wilkerson spent his solitary offseason doing what he needed to do in order to continue to perform, both in terms of physical work and mental preparation. As Bowles put it simply in his presser, “Muhammed’s a pro.” All of this is incredibly encouraging. Although Wilkerson’s future in Green and White is far from certain, his remarks off the field and play on it indicate that he is not going to let the ongoing negotiations impact his play.  Unlike the last time the Jets tried to extend a star player, it now seems unlikely that this situation will devolve into a holdout. Wilkerson’s future with Gang Green may not be resolved in the near future, but at the very least he has indicated that he will be with the team and remain fully engaged for this, the last season on his contract. With the Jets hungry for their first playoff appearance in 5 years, this is a most welcome development.
